Archtop guitars use steel strings on an acoustic body that bows outward, and the founder of the Gibson Guitar Corporation, Orville Gibson, is usually credited with the design. It grew in popularity in the 1950's and other companies jumped on the bandwagon - so to speak - and modern manufacturers like Yamaha and Epiphone currently make archtop models.
One great feature of some archtops is the ability to play in electric or acoustic mode. The body of these guitars are hollow like acoustic models, but use the heavier gauge strings and and electric pickups of the solid body to produce a very identifiable sound.
The warm tone that even non-amplified archtop style guitars make them extremely popular. Many have the electrical pick up system built in to amplify and adjust the sound. Semi-acoustic guitars are similar, but the music has a restricted quality when compared with a hollow bodied model. The pickups in the newer designs are placed at the bridge and or at the base of the neck.
One problem that had to be overcome with electric guitars was feedback. This was especially true with archtops and this contributed to the semi-archtop being created.
Many wonderful electric archtop guitars are held in collectors hands and are appreciated for their artistic value, but never get played as intended. The Rockabilly music sound is causing a renewed interest in the unique sound, so let's hope some of the older guitars will come out of retirement and new models will be produced by the major guitar makers.
Since many people buy used guitars from sellers on eBay and other auction sites, making sure your guitar is packed correctly should be a priority. Asking the seller how they pack and ship the guitar will help ease your mind. The tension the guitar strings place on the neck and bridge can vary with altitude, heat and cold, so ask them to loosen the strings from the normal tension.
There are boxes made for guitars that help secure it for shipping, but make sure the proper size is used. An electric archtop guitar will more than likely need a little bit deeper box, than say a solid body guitar. These are the types of things it is important to get straight in order to ensure the best chance of receiving a guitar in good condition.
Finally, the best shippers recommend placing the box within a larger box with additional packing materials, like styrofoam and the inflated plastic bubble wraps now available.
With so many great guitar manufacturers like Gibson, Epiphone, Fender, Martin and more, choosing a model that feels and sounds the way you always imagined is hard.
